Nina Hartley was born Marie Louise Hartman in March 1959. She grew up in Berkeley, California and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1977. After this, Nina decided to become a nurse and enrolled at San Francisco State University (SFSU) to study the subject. Although she graduated with the highest available honours, Nina had already decided to embark on a very different vocation.

During high school, Nina saw a screening of a pornographic film and soon realised that she wanted to appear in similar movies. However, it wasn’t until the second year of her nursing degree that she actively decided to pursue a career in adult entertainment. Since then, she has acted in over 700 movies and is widely regarded as a porn legend.

At a time when most female porn stars would only consent to conventional sex, Nina broke the mould by doing anal. She was also one of the first major stars to perform interracial scenes.
